Shugyō Karate Dōjō is a traditional Okinawan Goju-Ryu karate school dedicated to forging strong bodies, clear minds, and respectful spirits through the path of deep, lifelong training. Founded in 2012, the dojo began as a club for students of Scholars’ Hall Private School. What began with just a few students has since evolved into a thriving, independent community of martial artists committed to the pursuit of excellence on and off the dojo floor.
Recently, our dojo embraced a new name and direction. Guided by Sensei Tetsuji Nakamura, we became Shugyō Karate Dōjō—a name rooted in meaning and lineage. The character 修 (Shu) comes from the name of Nakamura Sensei’s first teacher, Shuichi Aragaki Sensei, and was chosen to honour that legacy. The word shugyō (修行) refers to intense, austere, and devoted practice—physical, mental, and spiritual. It reflects our core belief: that karate is not a sport or a hobby, but a lifelong discipline and a way of living with humility, purpose, and respect.
Our dojo is a proud member of the International Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Federation (IOGKF), preserving the traditional teachings passed down from Chojun Miyagi Sensei through generations of dedicated practitioners. Under the guidance of Sensei Sean Gore, and with the mentorship of Nakamura Sensei, we maintain high technical standards while fostering a community rooted in kindness, contribution, and character.
At Shugyō Karate Dōjō, we practice more than kata and kihon—we cultivate the self. We believe in training that builds not only strength and skill, but also patience, compassion, and resilience. Whether you’re a young beginner, an experienced martial artist, or someone returning to the path after time away, our dojo offers a place to grow.
Shugyō means to walk the path.
We invite you to walk it with us.
